OPA works by damaging the proteins and nucleic acids of microorganisms. Its complex mechanism involves several steps:

  • Penetration: OPA molecules can penetrate the cell wall and cell membrane of microorganisms.
  • Protein Binding: Once inside the cell, OPA binds to the sulfhydryl (-SH) groups of proteins essential for the life of microorganisms.
  • Protein Denaturation: The binding between OPA and proteins causes the proteins to lose their native three-dimensional structure (denaturation). Denatured proteins cannot function properly, leading to the death of microorganisms.
  • Nucleic Acid Damage: In addition to damaging proteins, OPA can also react with nucleic acids (DNA and RNA). Damage to nucleic acids interferes with the replication and protein synthesis of microorganisms, preventing their growth and development.
