A combination of 70% ethyl alcohol and 4% chlorhexidine gluconate (CHG) provides superior antimicrobial activity. Research suggests that a higher concentration of CHG (2-4%) is required when combined with surfactants to maintain efficacy. Surfactants enhance the effectiveness of CHG by their hydrophobic and hydrophilic properties, which respectively dissolve lipid membranes of bacteria and viruses and aid in water-based removal. This dual antiseptic action is more effective and works synergistically. Moisturizers are added to prevent skin dryness.
